Kyiv Fare Hikes to 30 UAH: Mayor Klitschko Cites Unavoidable Measures.
Public Transport Price Increase in Kyiv
According to Novyny.live: Kyiv is set to raise its public transit fare to 30 Ukrainian hryvnias per ride, a figure that will still remain below the actual cost of service. For context, the current cost per trip in the metro is roughly 60 UAH, while surface transport runs about 50 UAH. The city spends 12 billion UAH annually subsidizing its public transport system, which is a key driver behind this decision.
A family of three could see annual transport expenses reach up to 35,000 UAH, with a monthly pass in Kyiv potentially costing 4,875 UAH. Mayor Vitali Klitschko explained:
'We subsidize 12 billion UAH every year for public transport. But we also need to keep roads in good condition, update our fleet, raise salaries, and we are factoring in higher fuel and electricity costs. Our goal is to keep everything running. These are forced steps, but we have to raise fares.' Vitali Klitschko
In short, the new tariff adjustments for Kyiv’s public transport are a response to rising costs for maintaining and modernizing the capital’s transit infrastructure.
Reasons Behind the Tariff Increase
The fare hike is driven by the need to cover growing expenses for subsidies and system upgrades. Amid rising energy prices and the demand for better infrastructure, the new rates are seen as a crucial step to ensure stable public transport operations. This change will impact the finances of Kyiv residents, especially families with children who rely heavily on transit in their daily lives.
