EU Sanctions Russian Drone Parts Maker ABS Electro: What to Know.
EU Targets ABS Electro with New Sanctions
According to Espreso.tv: The European Council has imposed sanctions on the ABS Electro group of companies, which develops electronic and radio-electronic components for unmanned aerial vehicles. The measures also target Irina Kharisova, the group's chairperson, who is now banned from entering EU member states. These sanctions are part of broader efforts to counter actions that undermine Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.
The ABS Electro group is linked to systems that make Russian 'Shahed' and 'Geran' drones more resistant to electronic warfare countermeasures. Additionally, several firms within the group produce automated control systems for Russia's energy sector. The sanctions include asset freezes and a prohibition on providing funds or economic resources to the targeted entities.
Deadly Strikes on Kyiv
In July 2023, Russia launched a series of lethal attacks on Kyiv, resulting in numerous casualties. On July 1 and 5, strikes occurred, while a drone attack on the night of July 2 killed 10 people and injured over 100. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared July 3 a day of mourning for the victims. On the night of July 6, a missile hit a residential building, raising the death toll to 19, including a child, and leaving more than 60 injured. Air defenses failed to intercept any 'Iskander' or 'Zircon' ballistic missiles.

The sanctions against ABS Electro highlight the European Union's push to counter military threats linked to Russia's aggression in Ukraine. These measures could disrupt the supply of technologies used in military systems and underscore the importance of international cooperation for regional security. As the conflict continues, such decisions may form part of the EU's broader strategy to support Ukraine and deter further Russian aggression.
