Wagner's Failure in Mali: How the Kremlin Lost Influence and Thousands of Civilians

According to inkorr.com: The Russian private military company 'Wagner' suffered a serious defeat in Mali, where about two thousand mercenaries failed to meet the tasks assigned to them. The Kremlin hoped to expand its influence in this region, but unfortunately faced chaos and loss of trust from local authorities.

This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

Unfounded Hopes of the Kremlin

Under the leadership of Assimi Goita, who headed the government, the military leadership sought to cooperate with Russia and engage 'Wagnerites' to fight terrorists and control natural resources. However, these plans turned out to be futile, as the JNIM terrorist network, linked to 'Al-Qaeda,' continued to expand its presence, and the security of local residents only worsened.

Death Toll Is Rising

According to Ukrainian intelligence, from 2022 to 2024, the number of deaths among civilians increased by more than four times. Over three thousand people became victims of violence, and in 80% of cases, the responsibility for this lies not with jihadists, but with the Malian army and Russian mercenaries who used terrorist methods against the local population, leading to a decline in trust in 'Wagner.'

Conflicts and Confrontations

Amidst the disobedience of Russian mercenaries in Mali and manifestations of racism, conflicts arose that led to open confrontations. This year, dozens of Malian officers have suffered due to their statements against the actions of Russian allies.

The Kremlin has failed to implement its plans in Mali, even failing to gain control over gold mines. The head of the junta, Assimi Goita, refused to meet Moscow's demands and began searching for new partners in the field of security and mineral extraction.

As a result, the Russian company 'Wagner' suffered a failure in Mali, leading to increased violence and a decline in the Kremlin's positions in the region. The mercenaries could not effectively carry out their tasks, which contributed to the escalation of conflict with the local army and rising tensions in the country.
