How the Ukrainian Army Is Deploying Ground Robotic Systems

According to UATV: The Ukrainian Armed Forces are increasingly relying on ground robotic systems (GRS) for logistics, casualty evacuation, and direct combat roles on the frontline. These unmanned platforms are already in active use, with the 60th Brigade of the 3rd Army Corps employing them to secure positions along the Lyman axis in Donetsk region. By taking over dangerous supply routes and other high-risk tasks, these technologies allow the military to reduce the exposure of personnel while boosting mission efficiency.

Each GRS averages just four missions before being destroyed or disabled, a testament to the intense conditions they operate in. The 3rd Army Corps plans to replace one-third of its frontline infantry soldiers with such robotic systems in 2023. This shift could fundamentally transform how battles are fought and how troops are sustained in modern warfare.

Capabilities and Equipment of the Ground Robots

The versatility of these robotic platforms is striking. As one soldier explained,

“If we need to move supplies, we load them into a special compartment. If we use the GRS as an evacuation vehicle, we open two opposite sides, mount a stretcher, place a person on it, and the machine drives off.”
This illustrates how the same unit can switch between cargo transport and medical evacuation missions.

Military personnel also stress the importance of outfitting these robots with cutting-edge technology.

“We install a camera with a microphone and speaker on every evacuation GRS. I think we’ll also add electronic warfare systems,”
said one serviceman, highlighting the need to integrate counter-drone and signal-jamming capabilities into the control systems.

Notably, the combat modules equipped with a Browning machine gun are considered nearly ready for field deployment. “Our combat module with the Browning is an excellent model—a fighting machine that requires almost no further refinement,” a military expert stated. These modules are fitted with artificial intelligence, sensors, detectors, and cameras, ensuring high performance. “The chassis is very well made,” the expert added, praising the technical quality.

In short, the adoption of ground robotic systems by the Ukrainian military is opening new possibilities for logistics and combat support, significantly improving the effectiveness of frontline operations.

This move represents a major step in modernizing Ukraine’s armed forces, as it not only enhances logistics but also lowers risks to soldiers. Integrating the latest technologies could substantially alter combat strategies, a critical advantage in today’s conflict environment. Such innovations are expected to boost the combat readiness and adaptability of the Ukrainian military in the face of evolving challenges on the battlefield.
