Ryder Cup 2025: Europe prepares for a historic away victory.
Rory McIlroy's address to the European team
According to The Sun: Rory McIlroy urged his European teammates to prove they are among the best teams in Ryder Cup history and to win the trophy on American soil.
Since McIlroy, partner of Tom Fleetwood in the opening flurry against Collin Morikawa and Harris English, participated in Europe's remarkable comeback at the Ryder Cup in 2012, the home teams have dominated for five consecutive tournaments.
EPAHowever, the Masters champion believes Luke Donald's team can change this trend and secure an away win.
Donald included 11 of the same 12 players who won in Rome two years ago, replacing the Højgaard brothers: Rasmus is the only newcomer.
McIlroy, participating in his eighth Ryder Cup, noted:
“Since 2012, the home team has won every time, and convincingly. So whichever team breaks this streak will go down in history as one of the best in Ryder Cup history.”
“We are playing for history, for the players who came before us, and for those who laid the foundations of the European Ryder Cup team.”
“We have a wonderful opportunity, but it will be very difficult.”
McIlroy and the European team were in purple yesterday — the same color they wore in Medinah 13 years ago. He added:
“I love the continuity of this team. I love that 11 of 12 players are the same as in Rome, and the 12th has the same DNA as the others!”
The start of Europe’s defense
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton begin Europe’s defense against the American crowd favorites — Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas.
DeChambeau is undoubtedly disappointed that he cannot compete against McIlroy. He stated that he wants to compete against the European team star and called him
“a strong opponent”.
President Donald Trump will be present on Friday.
