Why the Kremlin Is Destroying Ukraine’s History: Russia Strikes the Dormition Cathedral.
Attacks on Cultural Sites in Ukraine
According to UATV: Russia’s ongoing strikes against cultural landmarks in Ukraine—most recently targeting the Dormition Cathedral—have sparked growing alarm. According to expert Oleksandr Leonov, these actions reveal a deliberate strategy to erase Ukraine’s historical heritage. He argues that targeting cultural sites marks a shift away from Russia’s earlier attempts to seize control of the country.
Russian assaults on cultural heritage in Ukraine first emerged in 2014, and the situation has only worsened since. The Dormition Cathedral, hit in the latest wave of shelling, stands as yet another example of this destructive pattern. In his remarks, Leonov underscores the significance of these strikes, viewing them as evidence of Russia’s hardened intentions.
“These strikes are meant to destroy history,” says Oleksandr Leonov.
Leonov also suggested that the attack on the Dormition Cathedral symbolizes Moscow’s farewell to Kyiv:
“In effect, Moscow is saying goodbye to Kyiv—both the ‘Kyiv in three days’ and the Kyiv that will never be reclaimed,” Leonov stated. This indicates that Russia may no longer aim to recapture the Ukrainian capital. The expert added, “Russia is thus showing that it can no longer seriously escalate the situation or raise the stakes.”
International Response to the Attacks
In reaction to these assaults, Ukraine’s National Commission for UNESCO has called on the international community to bar Russia from participating in key bodies of the organization. This move seeks to spotlight the urgent need to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage and prevent further destruction. The situation underscores the critical role of global support in preserving Ukraine’s history and cultural identity amid ongoing armed conflict.
The attacks on Ukrainian cultural sites—including the Dormition Cathedral—highlight not only the physical but also the symbolic erasure of the nation’s heritage, raising international concern. Russia’s actions in this regard can be seen as an effort to demoralize Ukrainian society by threatening its cultural identity. The global response, including calls for action from UNESCO, underscores the need for worldwide solidarity in safeguarding cultural treasures during times of war.
