Russian Strikes on Power Grid Leave Hundreds of Thousands Without Heat in Bitter Cold.
Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Targeted
According to TSN.ua: Russia launched another drone assault on Ukraine in the early hours of February 4, 2026. This followed a massive attack on the energy system the previous day, February 3, which left hundreds of thousands of people without heating. The timing was particularly severe, as temperatures in Ukraine plummeted to a record -25°C (-13°F) during the assault, creating a critical humanitarian situation in the affected regions. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.
The primary targets of the Russian energy strike were:
- Kyiv
- Kharkiv
- Dnipro
The attack resulted in approximately 1,100 residential buildings losing heat in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts. Denis Shmyhal noted that
"the enemy deliberately targeted combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) and thermal power plants (TPPs),"causing significant damage to energy infrastructure. Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the shutdown of a CHPP left these buildings without heating.
Furthermore, six people were wounded in the attack, with two requiring hospitalization. Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected across multiple regions, including:
- A UAV group from the Black Sea moving toward Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts
- Another group in eastern Kharkiv oblast heading for Donetsk oblast
- A new UAV group in northern Sumy oblast, directed toward Chernihiv oblast
- UAVs moving toward Tatarbunary in Odesa oblast
A high-speed target was also recorded heading for Kharkiv.
Conclusions
The assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure during a record-breaking cold snap highlights Russia's deliberate strategy in the war. In winter conditions, such actions can lead to severe social and humanitarian consequences, leaving thousands without essential heating. This situation underscores the critical importance of strengthening Ukraine's energy security and the ongoing need for international support to restore destroyed infrastructure.
