All Ukrainian Nuclear Plants Forced to Reduce Power After Russian Attacks

According to TSN.ua: A massive Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight on February 7th has forced all nuclear power plants in government-controlled territory to reduce their power output. The attack caused significant damage to the infrastructure that transports electricity to consumers. Ukraine's national energy company, Ukrenergo, confirmed extensive damage to the high-voltage transmission networks that are essential for the stable operation of the power grid. This marks a significant escalation in Russia's campaign to cripple Ukraine's energy sector, which has been a repeated target since the full-scale invasion began.

The strikes targeted critical high-voltage substations and power lines that handle the output from nuclear reactors. As a result, all nuclear power stations had to be taken to a reduced power state. The damaged 750 kV and 330 kV power lines and substations form the backbone of the national grid, and their impairment has had severe consequences for Ukraine's entire energy system.

Nuclear Safety Under Threat

"The nuclear safety of Ukraine and Europe is under threat" - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

However, as noted by Ludvig Litvinsky, there have been no pre-accident or accident situations directly at the nuclear plants themselves. He also emphasized that the safety systems of Ukrainian nuclear power plants were designed with such scenarios in mind, which helps to mitigate risks during this complex situation.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's critical infrastructure amid the ongoing war. Forcing nuclear plants to reduce output can lead to instability in the power supply, affecting both the population and the country's economy. The safety of nuclear facilities remains a paramount concern, and the international community continues to monitor developments closely to prevent potential catastrophic consequences.
