Kyiv Fatal Crash: Mercedes Driver with 39 Traffic Violations Remanded in Custody.
Tragic Incident in Kyiv
According to Espreso.tv: A devastating collision in Kyiv on June 5 claimed four lives when a Mercedes-Benz driver caused a fatal crash. The victims included two police district officers, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy, while three others sustained injuries. Law enforcement reports that the accident occurred around 5:00 PM on Chokolivsky Boulevard due to excessive speeding.
Pattern of Traffic Rule Violations
The driver, who leads a religious community of Evangelical Christian Baptists known as the 'Church of the Village of Pidstepne,' was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. However, he had been administratively penalized five times for speeding since January 2025 and accumulated 10 fines over the past 18 months.
His vehicle was recorded committing 39 traffic offenses, 18 of which occurred in the previous year alone. The driver himself suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.
The 49-year-old man has been charged with violating road safety regulations resulting in four deaths. On June 8, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of the capital ordered his arrest for 60 days without the possibility of bail.
Bolt, the company where the driver worked, has deactivated his account and reviewed its internal response procedures. Company representatives stated:
“We have also permanently restricted platform access for drivers who receive at least two complaints about speeding or dangerous driving.”
Bolt further noted: “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement in this case and remain in contact with the passenger, assisting her in obtaining necessary support.”
According to expert Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, “the driver had been ignoring traffic rules for years.” This tragedy serves as another stark reminder of road dangers and the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws.
The incident underscores serious issues in Ukraine with traffic compliance, particularly speeding. The case of a driver with numerous violations raises questions about the effectiveness of existing road safety monitoring mechanisms. It also highlights the responsibility of transportation service companies in ensuring the safety of their drivers and passengers.
