Odesa Hit by Major Drone Assault
According to UATV: In a major overnight assault on January 27, 2023, Russian forces launched over 50 attack drones against the city of Odesa. The strike damaged dozens of residential buildings, including apartments in multi-story blocks, as well as a church, a kindergarten, a lyceum, and a fitness center. Preliminary reports indicate 23 people were wounded, with nine requiring hospitalization.
Among the injured were two children and a pregnant woman. The attack resulted in at least one fatality, with a man's body recovered from the rubble. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene:
“We ran amid the explosions, with glass shattering everywhere,” said Tetiana.
Aftermath and International Condemnation
This assault on Odesa represents another grim episode in the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, which continues to inflict destruction and casualties. Emergency crews are currently working to clear the damage and provide aid to the victims.
The attack underscores the ongoing intensity of hostilities that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Targeting Odesa, a critical port city, highlights a continued Russian strategy of striking infrastructure and civilian morale. Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have reiterated calls for stronger sanctions against the aggressor and for increased military and humanitarian aid to affected regions. The strike on a major Black Sea port also disrupts global grain shipments, impacting food security far beyond Ukraine's borders.
