Odesa Hit by Russian Drone Strike, Leaving One Injured and Thousands Without Power.
Drone Attack on Odesa: January 19, 2023
According to UATV: In the early hours of January 19, 2023, Russian forces launched an attack on the city of Odesa using strike drones. The assault, which occurred around 1:30 AM, resulted in one 33-year-old man being wounded. The attack also inflicted severe damage on the city's power infrastructure, leaving over 30,000 subscribers without electricity. This strike is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian energy systems, particularly during the winter months.
Residents of Odesa reported hearing the distinct sounds of the drones as they fell. One eyewitness, Volodymyr, described the scene:
“Around 1:30 AM, we heard the sound of a 'Shahed' drone falling. The noise appeared suddenly, and then we heard the explosion. We were still at home; we ran outside in slippers, though we grabbed our jackets. We went down to the basement and waited there for the all-clear.” - Volodymyr
The city's power situation was already precarious following a strike on an energy facility in the Odesa region the previous night, on January 18. The January 19 attack pushed the electrical grid into an even more critical state. A local resident, Marmen, commented on the aftermath:
“We went down—everything was shattered, debris everywhere. Nothing new, it's the same everywhere, for everyone, just as it has been for us for four years now.” - Marmen
Conclusions and Consequences
Once again, Odesa found itself a target of Russian aggression, leading to civilian injury and severe consequences for critical energy infrastructure.
This assault on Odesa forms part of Russia's ongoing military actions against Ukraine, a conflict now in its second year that has caused immense damage to civilian infrastructure and triggered humanitarian crises. The loss of power and damage to residential buildings compound the difficulties for residents who have already endured numerous attacks. The situation in Odesa underscores the urgent need for continued international support and measures to ensure civilian safety amidst the ongoing war.
