Odesa Hit by Major Drone Assault

According to Novyny.live: A large-scale Russian drone attack struck Odesa on January 27, causing significant destruction to residential buildings and infrastructure and leaving 23 people wounded. This nighttime assault resulted in extensive damage and civilian casualties, underscoring the ongoing threat to Ukraine's port cities. The attack highlights the continued use of Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones by Russian forces against urban centers.

Of the 23 casualties, nine required hospitalization. Among those hospitalized are two children, born in 2013 and 2008, and a woman who was 39 weeks pregnant. Firefighters successfully rescued 14 people from the debris, including three children. Preliminary reports indicate over 10 separate impact sites, pointing to the coordinated nature of the assault.

Extent of the Damage

The strike damaged a kindergarten, a store, a construction site, and a number of residential buildings. A two-story house was completely destroyed, while in another building, an apartment on the second floor was damaged. In a four-story building, apartments from the second to the fourth floor were obliterated. A fire also broke out on the fourth and fifth floors of a nine-story building after it was hit. More than 160 rescue personnel are working at the scene.

Local residents recounted terrifying moments during the attack. One victim, Oleg, stated:

“Everything burned—documents, money, belongings. There is nothing left. My mother is 80 years old, she is with friends now and is terribly frightened.”
Another resident, Lidiia, noted:
“I ran out into the street, taking only my documents. It was very scary; apartments were burning, people were screaming.”

This attack caused severe destruction and has left many people homeless, illustrating the tragic human cost of the conflict in southern Ukraine. The assault on a major Black Sea port city disrupts a crucial corridor for global grain exports.

The mass drone strike on Odesa is further evidence of the escalation in military actions across Ukraine, which continues to fuel a severe humanitarian crisis. Such bombardments not only inflict physical damage but also inflict deep psychological trauma on the population, forcing people to flee their homes and seek shelter. In light of these events, it is critical to focus on the needs of the victims, who require urgent assistance and support.
