Ukraine Intercepts 156 Drones and Ballistic Missiles in Major Russian Assault.
Ukraine Thwarts Large-Scale Russian Attack
According to UATV: On February 5, Russian forces launched a major assault on Ukraine, firing two 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles and deploying 183 attack drones. The attack originated from occupied Crimea and several Russian regions, including Oryol, Bryansk, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo, and the so-called 'Donetsk People's Republic'. This large-scale strike is part of Russia's ongoing campaign of air attacks, which has intensified in recent months, targeting civilian infrastructure and military sites.
Preliminary data as of 08:00 indicates that Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted 156 of the hostile drones. However, ballistic missile impacts and strikes from 22 attack drones were recorded at 16 different locations, with debris from downed drones causing damage at seven additional sites.
Escalating Conflict and Ukrainian Defense
This latest assault underscores the continued escalation of hostilities and the persistent security challenges facing Ukraine. The attack is part of Russia's sustained military operations against Ukraine, which have continued since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, and marks another significant escalation in the conflict. The increased use of mass drone swarms alongside advanced ballistic missiles represents a tactical shift in Russia's warfare strategy, posing serious implications for the regional military situation. Ukrainian military command continues to work on strengthening its air defense capabilities and adapting to the evolving aerial threats the country faces in this prolonged war.
