According to Espreso.tv: Russia has started building a new garrison for its railway troops in Petrozavodsk, located between the districts of Kukkovka and Klyuchevaya. The new railway brigade is estimated to house between 2,500 and 3,000 military personnel. This project involves clearing a forest area roughly 1 kilometer long and up to 400 meters wide, drawing attention from local residents and environmental activists.

Role of Railway Troops and Future Plans

Russia’s railway troops are responsible for constructing, clearing, and repairing rail lines. The new garrison aims to boost the speed and efficiency of railway logistics in the region. In addition, plans are underway to establish the 44th Army Corps in Petrozavodsk, which could increase the total number of troops in the area to as many as 15,000.

Notably, the nearby company Amkodor-Onego may play a role in supporting the new military facilities. Meanwhile, at the Besovets airfield, lightweight hangars for fighter jets have been installed, signaling an upgrade to local military infrastructure. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, no drone strikes have been reported at the Besovets airfield.

Russia also intends to build another garrison near the village of Novaya Vilga, which could accommodate between 4,000 and 6,000 soldiers. These troop structure and deployment changes highlight Russia’s active efforts to strengthen its military presence in the region.
