Russia prepares interference in Latvia's elections: threats to the upcoming Saeima
According to UATV: In Ukraine, the risks of external interference in the upcoming elections to the Saeima of Latvia from Russia are increasing, as reported by the special representative of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for digital issues. Such interference could jeopardize the democratic process in the country, considering that the parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 3, 2023.
It is important to note that each composition of the Saeima consists of 100 deputies who are elected for four years. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative, the threat of interference will not begin in the last days or even months before the elections.
“Interference in the elections will not start a day or three months before the elections, possibilities are being sought now, they were being sought yesterday” - said Viktor Makarov. This underscores the need for readiness for possible actions by Russia that could impact voting results and the political situation in Latvia.
Thus, the situation surrounding the upcoming elections requires increased attention and security measures to ensure the integrity and transparency of the electoral process in the country.
Preparation for elections
Preparation for the elections in Latvia is taking place against a backdrop of growing concerns about external interference, particularly from Russia, which could negatively impact democratic processes in the country. The successful conduct of the elections will require not only proper organization but also active measures to prevent manipulation of information and disinformation that may undermine trust in the electoral process.
