Russia and India Strengthen Partnership After Trump's Tariffs: What It Means

Russia and India confirmed their strategic partnership during security talks in Moscow, which took place shortly after the U.S. imposed new tariffs on Indian imports. Defense officials Sergey Shoigu and Ajit Doval emphasized the intention to expand cooperation between the countries. This is a response to the threat of a trade conflict between India and the United States.

Why Russia and India Strengthen Partnership After New U.S. Tariffs

Russia and India reaffirmed their strategic partnership during security talks in Moscow. These meetings occurred immediately after U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of increased tariffs on Indian imports due to the purchase of Russian oil.

During the meeting between Doval and Russian Security Council Secretary Shoigu, both sides highlighted the importance of relations between the countries. The increase in tariffs on goods from India by Trump indicates a deepening crisis in relations between the U.S. and India since his election in January, threatening to worsen India's access to its main export market.

'We strive for further active cooperation to form a new, fairer, and more sustainable global order, ensure the supremacy of international law, and jointly combat modern challenges and threats,' said Shoigu to Doval in a television comment.

India and China are the largest buyers of Russian oil since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has prompted attempts by the West to impose sanctions on the Russian economy.

'We have excellent relations, a strategic partnership between our countries,' noted Doval.

There is also a concerning threat of measures from Trump against countries importing Russian oil, which was issued even before the announcement of new tariffs on Indian goods. India's National Security Advisor Doval noted that New Delhi expects a visit from President Putin by the end of the year.

It is worth recalling that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs sharply condemned Trump's decision to raise tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, considering it unjustified and unfair.

Earlier, it was reported that Trump signed a decree imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, which would double existing tariffs to 50%. The White House administration claims that this decision is aimed at protecting U.S. national economic interests.

Ukraine has shown resistance to Russian aggression, which resulted in Russia entering into trade conflicts that have affected the Kremlin's relations with India and other countries. Russia and India decided to strengthen their partnership in response to the negative reactions that followed the new U.S. tariff rates.
