Russia is approaching the capture of Pokrovsk: what it means for the front.
Russia is bringing its forces closer to capturing Pokrovsk in Donetsk region
According to inkorr.com: According to The New York Times, Russian troops are increasingly approaching the capture of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. This city has become the largest populated area in Ukraine since 2023 and holds significant strategic importance for the Russian leadership.
As a result of prolonged battles, Pokrovsk is in ruins, and its population has significantly decreased. Ukrainian military reports intense fighting to defend this city.
'A third of all battles are for one city,' noted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
About a third of all combat actions on the front are taking place in Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian forces are trying to fend off Russian attacks and air strikes. In recent days, Russian troops have taken the southwestern outskirts of the city and concentrated their forces in its center and western part.
Geopolitical consequences of a possible capture of Pokrovsk
The capture of Pokrovsk is considered an important strategic victory for Russia, which may threaten other Ukrainian cities such as Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. It could also strengthen the Russian narrative about successes on the battlefield and escalate the situation in the region.
Despite this geopolitical importance, the loss of Pokrovsk may not significantly affect the military situation in Ukraine due to the high casualties among Russian forces and the difficulties they face in advancing in the Donetsk region.
In recent days, the situation in Donetsk has become increasingly tense, and the possible capture of Pokrovsk may have serious consequences for the conflict in Ukraine and the whole region.
