Russia's Reported Military Objectives

According to TSN.ua: According to a senior Ukrainian official, Russia's military leadership has set a goal to reach the administrative borders of Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast by the end of March or early April 2026. This timeline was revealed by Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the President's Office, who stated this is a primary objective for Russian forces. This long-term goal underscores the protracted nature of the conflict, now in its third year.

Beyond Donetsk, the Russian Federation also intends to push as far as possible into Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. As part of this strategy, Russia plans to establish a so-called 'buffer zone' in the border regions of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts. By the end of this year, the adversary aims to create conditions for the eventual capture of major regional centers in southern and eastern Ukraine, specifically:

  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Kherson
  • Mykolaiv
  • Odesa

Ukrainian Assessment of Russian Capabilities

However, Pavlo Palisa noted that Ukraine's Presidential Office does not currently see the realistic military capacity for Russia to execute its plans to capture these southern cities within the next six months.

"As of now, I do not see the enemy having the capability to implement these plans in the nearest half-year," Palisa stated, commenting on the frontline situation.
These remarks reflect a cautious approach from Ukrainian leadership regarding predictions of enemy military action in the region.

The frontline situation remains tense, and forecasts of potential Russian offensive actions are a cause for concern. Nevertheless, based on its analysis of enemy capabilities, Ukrainian leadership emphasizes the absence of realistic chances for Russia to successfully carry out such ambitious plans in the short term. This indicates Ukraine's strategic readiness to counter potential threats and maintain control over key regions, despite facing a larger adversary.
