Russia's Imports of Aviation Fuel

According to UATV: In response to a fuel crisis triggered by Ukrainian strikes on its energy infrastructure, Russia is arranging to import aviation fuel of Japanese origin through international traders. According to available information, at least 200,000 barrels of jet fuel are scheduled for loading at Japan's Chiba port during the first half of July 2023. The shipment will first travel to South Korea, where it will be transferred at the port of Yeosu before ultimately being delivered to Russia.

Notably, the last similar delivery to Russia occurred in February 2022, when approximately 22,000 barrels of aviation fuel were sent from Yeosu to Vladivostok. Meanwhile, Russia's own exports of aviation fuel have dropped significantly—from around 30,000 barrels per day in 2022 to just about 13,000 barrels per day in 2026.

Fuel Market Conditions

Turkey remains the primary destination for Russian fuel exports. Domestically, gasoline prices in Russia have surged past 100 rubles (roughly $1.27) per liter, reflecting severe strain in the fuel market. These developments confirm that Russia is actively seeking alternative fuel supply sources amid growing shortages.

This situation underscores the mounting difficulties facing the Russian economy due to international sanctions and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The search for new fuel supply channels highlights Russia's need to adapt to shifting conditions in the global energy market. Rising gasoline prices could further destabilize the domestic economy, creating additional social and economic challenges for the population.
