Moscow Weaponizes Sports and the Church, Says Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence on the Extended Battlefield.
The Kremlin’s Cultural and Information Warfare Tactics
According to Novyny.live: According to Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, the Kremlin is deploying military, information, and cultural tools—including sports and religious institutions—as instruments of influence. Yusov made these remarks to journalist Diana Shlykova, explaining that Russia actively uses literature, 'soft power,' ballet, athletics, and the church to advance its propaganda.
Yusov stressed that these are not merely cultural elements but
“instruments of murder.”He noted that
“the front line extends far beyond the actual combat zone,”highlighting the broad spectrum of Russia’s influence operations.
Russia’s Propaganda Reaches Global Scale
Additionally, Andriy Chernyak of the GUR stated that Russia has not lost significant sway in Africa, underscoring the global reach of its propaganda machine. These statements emphasize the critical need to recognize how cultural and information tools are leveraged in modern geopolitics.
The remarks by Ukraine’s GUR officials draw attention to the fact that cultural and informational instruments can be harnessed to achieve political objectives. This underscores the necessity of actively countering Russian propaganda not only on the military front but also in the cultural and information domains. Understanding these influence mechanisms is vital for crafting an effective strategy to respond to threats posed by Russia.
