Russia's Ballistic Missile Barrage Hits New High: 91 Fired in January 2026.
Military Escalation in January 2026
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces launched a record number of ballistic missiles against Ukraine in January 2026, firing a total of 91, the highest monthly figure recorded since the war began. This escalation has heightened international alarm and underscored a significant intensification of hostilities. The increased use of these difficult-to-intercept weapons represents a major shift in Russian tactics.
During the first week of January, 18 ballistic missiles were launched, with one intercepted. In the second week, Russian troops fired 38 missiles, including types 9M723, KN-23, and 5V55, resulting in 11 targets being destroyed. The third week saw 23 ballistic missiles launched, 14 of which were successfully shot down. In the final week of January, 12 missiles were recorded, with 5 destroyed.
Ballistic Missile Usage Statistics
The previous record for ballistic missiles launched in a single month was 89, set in October 2025. Among the missiles used in January were Kh-101 models, deployed only on the night of January 20, when 15 were fired and 13 were shot down. Furthermore, 'Kalibr' cruise missiles were launched on the night of January 9—22 missiles, of which 10 were destroyed.
Overall, ballistic missiles were used nearly 2.5 times more frequently than cruise missiles. Military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko noted that
“ballistic strike assets have effectively become the primary instrument of Russia's missile terror,”highlighting the severe threat these attacks pose to Ukraine's security. This reliance on ballistic weaponry challenges existing air defense systems.
The rising number of ballistic missiles employed by Russia points to a potential further escalation of the conflict and a buildup of military capabilities. Given existing international concerns, this development may prompt new diplomatic efforts or lead to increased military support for Ukraine from its Western partners. It is crucial for the global community to respond decisively to these threats to prevent a further surge of violence in the region.
