Fuel Crisis Slashes Russia’s 2026 Harvest to Just 3% of Target.
Russia’s Harvest Falls Behind Schedule
According to Espreso.tv: As of July 1, only 3% of Russia’s planned 2026 crop area—amounting to 1.3 million hectares—has been threshed, marking a delay of one to two weeks. The slowdown stems from fuel supply disruptions and unfavorable weather, threatening the country’s agricultural sector. These setbacks come at a critical time for Russian farming, which already faces pressure from international sanctions and domestic instability.
Delivering fuel to farms now takes between 5 and 10 days, further complicating harvest operations. Despite these hurdles, large agricultural enterprises reportedly have enough diesel to last through the end of 2026. In late June, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the fuel issues, announcing a complete ban on gasoline exports and pledging to tighten control over regional fuel supplies.
Fuel Supply Chain Under Strain
Meanwhile, Russian companies have nearly halted all seaborne diesel exports, deepening the crisis. On July 2, a fire broke out at the Lukoil-Nizhny Novgorod refinery, while Ukraine’s Security Service struck the Slaviansk and Yaroslavl refineries—events that could further disrupt fuel availability for agriculture.
Vladimir Putin assured that 'farms will receive fuel in full volume.'
The harvest delays and fuel shortages could severely impact Russia’s agricultural sector, which is already grappling with external sanctions and internal crises. If fuel supply conditions do not improve, yields may drop and food prices could rise, ultimately affecting the broader economy. Given these developments, monitoring the situation and its effects on Russia’s agricultural market remains crucial.
