Failed Peace Talks Precede Major Russian Missile and Drone Assault on Ukraine.
Latest Developments in Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 26, 2026, Russia launched a massive combined missile and drone attack against Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing war. The assault, which came after the collapse of diplomatic negotiations, saw Ukrainian forces intercept 420 drones and 39 missiles of various types, including 11 ballistic missiles. In the city of Kharkiv, the strikes wounded at least 14 people, one of whom was a child. This attack underscores the grim reality that diplomatic efforts have so far failed to curb the violence.
Military Losses and Reactions
Over four years of war, Russian military casualties have surpassed 1.26 million killed and wounded. As the international community continues to call on Moscow to end its invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin has doubled down on terror and aggression, according to analyst Andriy Sybiha. Concurrently, Ukraine has undergone a profound societal shift during the conflict, renaming over 35,000 streets, memorials, and toponyms and removing 1,550 monuments linked to its Soviet and imperial past.
Ukraine's military capabilities have been bolstered by Western aid, with F-16 fighter jets arriving in summer 2024 and Mirage 2000 aircraft following in 2025. In autumn 2024, Ukraine began using long-range ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles to strike targets inside Russia. In retaliation, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine's nuclear energy infrastructure, repeatedly targeting its nuclear power plants, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also noted that when Russia fails to achieve victory on the battlefield, it typically resorts to searching for nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory.
This situation highlights the severe threats facing Ukraine and the critical need for sustained international support to counter Russian aggression. The current escalation points to a protracted conflict with no end in sight, continuing to claim both civilian and military lives. The relentless strikes on critical infrastructure underscore the deadlock and the absence of progress in peace talks. While Western military aid helps Ukraine resist, the devastating consequences of this war continue to mount for all involved.
