Kyiv's Energy Grid Targeted in Major Russian Barrage: Up to 310 Strikes in a Day.
Massive Attack on Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 22, 2023, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault across Ukraine, with a particular focus on Kyiv's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian General Mykola Malomuzh reported that up to 310 attacks were recorded that day, targeting energy facilities in and around the capital. Among the key targets were the Tripilska Thermal Power Plant and other combined heat and power plants. This attack is part of a broader Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, which has been ongoing for over a year.
This marked the third instance of such a massive bombardment, occurring after diplomatic talks. General Malomuzh noted that Russian forces are diversifying their strike patterns, employing various missile types, including 'Kinzhal' hypersonic missiles, alongside drones. He assessed that 80% of Russian troops are poorly trained and that low morale among soldiers is exacerbated by harsh winter conditions.
Negotiations and Aftermath of the Attack
General Malomuzh further emphasized that the Russian side is attempting to create advantageous negotiating positions but lacks sufficient leverage.
'The enemy is trying to create genuinely favorable negotiation positions, but he has no arguments. That is why he is returning to massive attacks,' - Mykola Malomuzh. He characterized this assault as an act of desperation, while simultaneously warning of its danger.
'If Putin truly had powerful reserves, he would have long ago thrown another half a million men at all fronts,' added the general, expressing doubt in Russia's capacity to sustain such large-scale operations. Malomuzh also stated,
'This attack is born of desperation. But it is dangerous,' - Mykola Malomuzh.underscoring the severity of the situation.
This attack is a continuation of the multi-year conflict between Ukraine and Russia that began in 2014. It highlights that despite negotiations, the situation remains highly volatile, with Russia's actions indicating attempts to bolster its international standing. Given the high volume of strikes, Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains under severe threat, which could have a significant impact on civilian life and the country's economy. The international community continues to monitor these developments closely, as they have global implications for energy security and geopolitical stability.
