Ukraine's Energy Grid Hit by Fifth Major Russian Assault, Triggering Widespread Blackouts.
State of Ukraine's Energy System on March 7
According to Novyny.live: On March 7, 2023, Russian forces launched their fifth large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The assault caused power outages for consumers in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Khmelnytskyi, Poltava, and Kharkiv regions, and also disrupted the heating supply in the capital, Kyiv. These systematic strikes are part of a broader Russian campaign to target civilian infrastructure during the winter months.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine's energy sector has sustained immense damage, with losses now estimated at $24.8 billion. In response to the critical situation, Ukraine's Ministry of Energy has urged consumers in affected areas to use electricity sparingly throughout the day, with particular emphasis on reducing usage during the peak morning and evening hours.
Forecasts and Countermeasures
Serhii Kovalenko, CEO of the energy supplier YASNO, stated that the situation with electricity supply in Ukraine is expected to improve in April. Concurrently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a comprehensive plan to protect the country's energy infrastructure is ready for implementation.
“The situation in Ukraine's energy system remains critical due to constant attacks by Russian troops, which underscores the importance of protecting energy infrastructure.” - Press Service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine
The government and energy companies are implementing measures to mitigate the impact of these attacks, while continuing to call on the public to conserve power. The anticipated improvement in April may signal the successful execution of the protection plan and the gradual restoration of energy capacities.
