Russian Forces Risk Anthrax Outbreak in Kherson Region: Ukraine’s Intelligence Reveals Details.
Anthrax Threat Grows in Occupied Kherson
According to UATV: Russian troops are creating conditions for an anthrax outbreak in the temporarily occupied parts of Ukraine’s Kherson region. According to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense, they are disposing of infected livestock without following proper sanitary protocols. This reckless behavior poses a direct threat to both local residents and the environment.
HUR reports that up to 50 burial sites for diseased animals exist across the Kherson region. Around 10 of these locations are considered especially dangerous due to their proximity to populated areas and vulnerable ecosystems.
Risks to Public Health and the Environment
These burial grounds are situated near the settlements of Askania-Nova, Skadovsk, and Zaliznyi Port. Some sites are less than one kilometer from residential buildings, significantly raising the risk of human exposure. Additionally, several burial sites are located in areas with high groundwater levels, which could accelerate the spread of the disease.
“The Russians dispose of infected animals without observing any sanitary standards,” HUR officials stated.
They further emphasized that “deliberately or negligently creating conditions for an anthrax outbreak is yet another crime by the aggressor state, Russia.” Local residents and healthcare professionals are deeply alarmed, as the consequences could be catastrophic for both people and animals.
The improper burial of infected livestock in occupied Kherson highlights not only the humanitarian toll of the war but also the growing environmental dangers. An anthrax outbreak could have severe impacts on public health and the region’s agricultural sector. With limited access to medical resources and specialists due to the conflict, the risk of epidemics becomes even more pressing.
