Russian troops increased the pace of their offensive in 2025: new ISW data.
According to ТСН: In 2025, Russian occupation forces managed to increase the average speed of their advance due to a new operational model based on technological advancements and changes in attack tactics.
Data Analysis
According to the analysis, Russian military captured 4,831 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory and reclaimed approximately 473 square kilometers previously controlled by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region in 2025. This accounts for 0.8% of the total area of Ukraine.
In 2024, the Russians captured 3,604 square kilometers of Ukrainian land.
The data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine indicate that in 2025, Russian troops suffered 416,570 casualties, averaging 78 casualties per square kilometer of seized territory in Ukraine and the Kursk region.
“The average daily rate of advance of Russian troops in 2025 was 13.24 square kilometers per day, which exceeds the average daily rate of 9.87 square kilometers per day in 2024,” the report states.
Pace of Advance and New Technologies
The pace of advance of Russian forces in 2025 was uneven. The highest rates were recorded in November — 20.99 square kilometers per day, however, this peak followed one of the slowest months of the year — 8.8 square kilometers per day in October, and then slowed again to 15 square kilometers per day in December.
Russian troops implemented a new operational model that includes strategic air blockade campaigns, tactical blockades, penetration missions, and massive strikes by small groups. This allowed Ukrainian troops to advance in the directions of Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole in the fall of 2025.
At the same time, reports from DeepState indicate that in December, Russian troops captured 445 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, which is 12% less than in November 2025. The number of assaults decreased by 9%, and analysts link this to personnel problems in the RF army.
It was previously noted that 2025 significantly influenced the battlefield situation, particularly due to extensive use of drones in combat operations.
The situation at the front remains tense as Russia continues to employ cutting-edge technologies to achieve its military objectives. At the same time, Ukrainian forces are also adapting to the new conditions, striving to maintain control over territories and prevent further losses. Observations of the conflict dynamics indicate that both sides continue to fight for strategic advantage in this protracted war.
