Russian military adapts tactics near Kupyansk

According to UATV: In Kharkiv Oblast, Russian troops have changed their approach on the Kupyansk axis, now relying on small infantry units to infiltrate and reach Ukrainian positions. This shift signals Moscow’s effort to wear down Ukrainian defenses through new methods of engagement. Vladyslav Zolotarev, an officer in the operational group of the 1st Border Command 'Orion' of the 'Pomsta' Brigade, stated that the situation remains firmly under Ukrainian control.

According to Zolotarev, since autumn 2025, no heavy enemy armor has been observed in this sector. This likely indicates that Russian forces are placing greater emphasis on infantry, as heavy equipment has become less effective on the battlefield. Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops have established a 'kill zone' extending 25–30 kilometers deep into enemy territory, enabling them to respond quickly to tactical changes.

Operation 'Logistics Lockdown'

Ukraine’s defense forces continue to carry out Operation 'Logistics Lockdown,' which aims to disrupt supply routes leading into southern Ukraine and occupied Crimea. Zolotarev noted that

“this tactic of using our drones deep behind enemy lines is primarily about logistics”
— highlighting the critical role of controlling enemy supply and movement networks.

He also observed that

“we have noticed a decrease in the intensity of drone usage”
. This development may reflect Russian forces adapting to new battlefield conditions, and it underscores the need for Ukrainian forces to reassess their strategies in response to evolving enemy tactics.

The change in Russian tactics on the Kupyansk front points to an evolution in combat operations that could shape the conflict’s trajectory in the region. The use of small infantry groups suggests Moscow is trying to adapt to conditions where heavy armor has proven less effective. Ukraine’s Operation 'Logistics Lockdown' further emphasizes the importance of disrupting enemy supply lines, which could significantly hinder Russia’s ability to sustain future combat operations.
