Bulgaria will support a reparations loan for Ukraine: what is the condition.
According to ТСН: At the EU summit, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov expressed support for using frozen Russian assets to finance aid to Ukraine, but on the condition that other EU countries agree to the reparations loan.
He added that the concerns of Belgium and Italy regarding this plan are understandable, but do not indicate a lack of support for the overall idea of financing Ukraine.
Earlier, Bulgaria, along with Belgium, Italy, and Malta, signed a declaration proposing alternative approaches to providing Ukraine with a loan based on frozen assets, raising questions about Sofia's readiness to support this measure.
Zhelyazkov noted that Bulgaria's position aligns with the goal of achieving lasting peace, protecting Ukraine's sovereignty, and supporting its recovery.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the joint declaration of the four countries emphasizes the need to continue discussions to find reliable financial support for Ukraine that complies with EU legislation and international norms.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also emphasized the importance of using frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine, noting that this could be a turning point.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that if Ukraine does not receive a reparations loan funded by frozen Russian assets, it will become vulnerable, and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin will abandon any diplomatic avenues to end the war.
This discussion at the EU summit reflects the growing attention of the international community to financial mechanisms that can support Ukraine amid the ongoing war. The use of frozen assets is gaining particular significance as many countries seek ways to provide assistance without violating international commitments. Thus, discussing these issues is an important step toward forming a unified EU position regarding assistance to Ukraine.
