Sts. Olha and Elizabeth Church Targeted

According to Novyny.live: A Russian drone attack damaged the Sts. Olha and Elizabeth Church in Lviv on January 15, 2023, at approximately 7:00 a.m. The explosion occurred just before the church's usual opening time of 7:20 a.m. This marks the second time this local heritage site, which is over 100 years old, has been damaged. Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has seen its historic architecture repeatedly threatened since the full-scale invasion began.

Extensive Damage to the Historic Building

The strike caused significant damage, shattering double-glazed windows, damaging other windows, and leaving holes in the walls. A stained-glass window approximately 40 years old was also damaged. A municipal worker was nearby at the time of the impact but survived without injury. Church officials are currently documenting all the damage in preparation for restoration work.

Father Ivan Halimurka, a priest at the church, emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting this was the second time the sanctuary has been damaged by Russian strikes.

This church was previously damaged in the fall of 2022 during a missile attack in the vicinity of Mykhnivskykh Street. This latest incident further highlights the ongoing threat military actions pose to Ukraine's historical and cultural monuments. The targeting of religious and cultural sites is a violation of international humanitarian law and represents a profound loss to shared human heritage.

Attacks on Ukraine's cultural and historical landmarks, including churches, underscore the broader impact of the war on the nation's heritage. These events highlight the urgent need for international support to protect and restore sites that are integral to the country's cultural identity, especially during armed conflict.
