Russian Naval Strike Sinks Civilian Ship Helt Near Odesa, Crew Rescued Under Fire.
The Sinking of the Vessel
According to Novyny.live: On March 3, 2022, the cargo ship Helt was sunk by a missile strike from a Russian warship near Odesa. The vessel, owned by the Estonian company Vista Shipping Agency and sailing under the Panamanian flag, went down approximately 14 miles from the Tendra Spit. All six crew members were rescued in an operation that Russian naval forces actively tried to obstruct. This attack on a civilian merchant ship highlights the severe risks to commercial shipping in the Black Sea since the full-scale invasion began. As Viktor Tsiushko noted,
'There were no warnings from the Russian ship whatsoever.'
A Pattern of Attacks on Civilian Shipping
The Helt incident is part of a broader assault on civilian vessels during the war in Ukraine. Since the conflict started, 694 port infrastructure facilities have been damaged or destroyed, along with over 150 civilian ships. Despite this, the Ukrainian maritime corridor has facilitated the export of more than 176 million tons of cargo, of which over 150 million tons is grain. In 2025 alone, the corridor handled 73.2 million tons of cargo, including 38.1 million tons of grain. These figures underscore the critical importance and vulnerability of this shipping route for global food security.
The sinking of the Helt emphasizes the threat military actions pose to civilian navigation in the Black Sea region. Attacks on merchant ships not only endanger crews but also disrupt vital global trade routes, particularly for grain exports. This situation calls into question the effectiveness of international efforts to secure Ukrainian waters and underscores the urgent need for enhanced protective measures for civilian vessels transiting this volatile area.
