Aging Tankers in Russia's 'Shadow Fleet' Pose Environmental Threat Off Britain's Coast.
Environmental Danger from Russia's 'Shadow Fleet'
According to TSN.ua: Russia's 'shadow fleet' of oil tankers—used to bypass Western sanctions—now poses a serious environmental risk in UK waters. These old vessels are employed for covert oil sales, raising alarms about potential ecological disasters. Russia has relied on such tankers for roughly two decades, and in the past 12 months alone, over 90 of these ships have traveled past Britain's coastline.
Environmental Hazards and Economic Fallout
The tankers carrying Russian oil are vulnerable to metal fatigue, hull corrosion, and structural failure due to prolonged use. Western companies typically avoid operating tankers older than 15 years. The situation is worsened by the fact that some of these vessels are up to 27 years old, and their structural damage could trigger leaks of tens of thousands of tons of oil. Over the last year, Russian oil worth up to £6.8 billion has been transported through British waters.
Moscow earned approximately £174 billion from fossil fuel sales last year. Experts warn that Russia's 'shadow fleet' could become a 'ticking time bomb.'
As Salim Khan notes: 'The question is not if a catastrophic spill will happen, but when.'This situation demands urgent international action to prevent potential ecological disasters in UK waters.
The heavy reliance on aging oil tankers presents new environmental safety challenges for the global community. Water pollution risks and negative impacts on marine life could have severe consequences not only for the UK's ecosystem but also for neighboring countries. It is critical that relevant authorities and environmental organizations prioritize monitoring and develop measures to avert potential catastrophes stemming from the use of these tankers.
