Verdict from Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi District Court

According to Novyny.live: A Kyiv court has sentenced a Russian serviceman to life imprisonment for the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The verdict was announced on February 20, 2023, following a statement by Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, regarding the punishment handed down to the soldier. This case is part of Ukraine's broader effort to hold individuals accountable for atrocities committed during the ongoing conflict.

The convicted individual served in the 1st Company, 1st Battalion of the 40th Separate Naval Infantry Brigade, part of the Russian Pacific Fleet. The court established that during combat operations in January 2025 in Kursk Oblast, two Ukrainian servicemen were killed. A critical finding of the ruling was that there was no military necessity justifying the use of lethal force against the prisoners.

Prosecutor General's Statement

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the convict to pay 50 million hryvnias in moral damages to the victims' families. Commenting on the court's decision, Ruslan Kravchenko stated:

“The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv has found the Russian serviceman guilty of a war crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment.” — Ruslan Kravchenko

This ruling represents a significant step in addressing war crimes committed by Russian military personnel and underscores the Ukrainian authorities' intent to deliver justice for victims of the conflict. The continuation of such investigations and trials not only helps restore a measure of justice for the affected but also sends a clear signal that violations of international humanitarian law will not go unpunished. In this way, Ukraine demonstrates its resolve to combat lawlessness and uphold legal accountability even amidst war.
