Drone Violations Drive Romania to Expel Russian Diplomat and Recall Ambassador.
Russian Drones in Romanian Skies: A Series of Incidents
According to UATV: Romania has decided to recall its ambassador from Moscow for consultations after a string of incidents where Russian drones entered its airspace. At the same time, the country is expelling a Russian diplomat, highlighting how seriously it views these breaches. Romania, a NATO member that shares a border with Ukraine, has been on alert for airspace violations since the war began.
Over three consecutive days, Romanian F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept drones that violated national airspace. Three drones were shot down using three air-to-air missiles, each costing roughly $400,000, pushing the total cost of these operations to about €1.5 million. On July 24, a Romanian F-16 destroyed a drone that had crossed into the country's airspace.
Escalating Tensions and Russia's Accountability
Romania's Foreign Ministry explicitly pointed the finger at Russia for the incidents. It stated:
“At the meeting, the Romanian side made it unequivocally clear who is responsible for the incidents.”The ministry further emphasized that
“the continuing violations by Russia of Romania's airspace, which is also NATO and EU airspace, are absolutely unacceptable.”It declared that 'Russia bears sole responsibility for all these serious incidents.' These developments indicate a sharpening of regional tensions and underscore the importance of protecting airspace.
The incidents reflect a growing confrontation between Russia and NATO countries, particularly regarding airspace security. By expelling a Russian diplomat and recalling its own ambassador, Romania is sending a strong signal that could affect diplomatic ties. As a NATO member, Romania is showing its determination to defend its airspace from external threats, potentially leading to further friction in the region.
