Romania Closes Russian Consulate in Constanța

According to Novyny.live: On May 29, 2023, Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat and the closure of the Russian Federation's consulate in Constanța. The decision follows an incident in Galați, where a Russian drone struck a residential building, causing an explosion and fire. Two civilians were injured in the attack.

Russia's Consul General in Constanța has been declared persona non grata. The Romanian president emphasized that

“full responsibility for this lies with Russia”
and held a phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss civil protection measures in response to the event.

Mark Rutte described this as the most serious security incident on Romanian soil since the start of Russia's war against Ukraine. The expulsion of the Russian consul and the closure of the consulate represent key steps in Romania's response to aggression and threats originating from Russia.

Rising Tensions with Russia

The closure of Russia's consulate in Constanța highlights the growing strain in relations between Romania and Russia, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This move may have repercussions for bilateral diplomatic ties and could affect the regional security landscape, where Romania plays a key role as a NATO ally.

Further measures from Romania and its partners are likely in the future, aimed at strengthening security and ensuring the protection of civilians.
