Ruslan Kravchenko Appointed Prosecutor General

According to Espreso.tv: Ruslan Kravchenko was appointed Ukraine's youngest Prosecutor General on June 21, 2025, at the age of 35. During his tenure, numerous war crimes have been documented, but he has also been involved in anti-corruption scandals. This appointment comes at a critical time for Ukraine, as the country continues to grapple with the ongoing war with Russia and demands for institutional reform.

Born on March 14, 1990, in Sievierodonetsk, Kravchenko studied at the Kyiv Military Lyceum and Kharkiv Law Academy. He began his career as an investigator in the Sevastopol prosecutor’s office in 2012. From 2014 to 2015, he served as a military prosecutor in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) zone, a key milestone in his career. He later headed the Bucha District Prosecutor’s Office from 2021 to 2023, and from April 2023 to December 2024, he led the Kyiv Regional State Administration.

Kravchenko’s appointment followed the resignation of Andriy Kostin, who stepped down on October 22, 2024. Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved Kostin’s resignation on October 29, 2024, with 255 votes. On June 17, 2025, the Rada backed Kravchenko’s candidacy with 273 votes in favor and five against.

Challenges and Issues Facing the Prosecutor General

The Prosecutor General’s Office has registered 72,295 criminal proceedings related to Russian aggression, of which 258 cases have been sent to court, resulting in 97 convictions. Damages in the defense sector amount to over UAH 3.4 billion. Kravchenko has emphasized the need for transparency, stating:

“The prosecutor’s office must not only deliver results but also provide meaningful reports to the citizens in whose interests we act every day.”

When asked about a possible resignation, Kravchenko replied: “I have not submitted and do not intend to submit my resignation. I am in my place. And I continue to fulfill my duties as Prosecutor General.” His remarks underscore his determination and commitment to stability in managing the prosecutor’s office amid complex challenges.

Kravchenko’s appointment highlights a youth-driven approach to leading key state institutions in Ukraine, especially given the war with Russia and the urgent need to combat corruption. The country’s current situation demands effective action and transparency from the prosecutor’s office, which Kravchenko has pledged to deliver. His resolve in carrying out his duties and his focus on accountability to citizens could be crucial in restoring trust in Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies.
