Three Suspects Named in Scheme to Embezzle UAH 102 Million from Tank Defense Procurement.

Charges Filed in Embezzlement Case

According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine's Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has formally charged three individuals in connection with a scheme to siphon off funds during the purchase of reactive armor for tanks by the Ministry of Defense in April 2022. The total damage caused by the alleged criminal activity exceeds 102 million hryvnias.

In April 2022, the Ministry of Defense urgently contracted a state-owned enterprise to supply reactive armor for tanks. According to investigators, the company's CEO devised a plan to steal public money by routing the purchase through shell companies. A private firm brought into the deal was not a certified manufacturer of such armor, and the actual cost of the components was nearly ten times lower than the contract price.

Corruption in Ukraine

The alleged mastermind of the scheme is currently in custody. It is worth noting that on July 21 of this year, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau uncovered a separate plot involving the embezzlement of over 150 million hryvnias from the National Guard of Ukraine. In that case, eight individuals have been charged, highlighting the scale of corruption in state procurement.

This case underscores serious corruption issues in Ukraine, particularly within public procurement, which can hinder the efficient use of budget funds, especially during wartime.
