Ukrainian Drone Strikes Hit Lukoil Refinery in Komi from Record 1,750 km Away.
Drone Attack on Lukoil's Refinery
According to TSN.ua: On February 12, Ukrainian defense forces successfully struck a Lukoil oil refinery in the Komi Republic of Russia, causing a major fire. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out the attack using drones that traveled a record distance of approximately 1,750 kilometers. This operation marks a significant development in the conflict, showcasing Ukraine's enhanced capability to strike strategic targets deep inside Russian territory.
The targeted Lukoil facility processes around 4.2 million tons of crude oil annually. Its primary output includes:
- automotive and straight-run gasoline,
- diesel fuel,
- fuel oil,
- vacuum gas oil.
Striking this key strategic asset could have serious consequences for the regional economy, as the plant plays a vital role in the local fuel supply chain.
Escalation of Long-Range Operations
This strike was part of a coordinated effort, following an attack just one day earlier on February 11. On that date, drones hit the 'Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka' refinery, the largest in the region with an annual capacity of 15 million tons of oil. These back-to-back attacks signal a clear escalation in the range and scale of Ukraine's military operations, demonstrating a sustained ability to target critical enemy infrastructure far from the front lines.
The strikes on Lukoil facilities underscore not only Ukraine's evolving military strategy but also the critical importance of energy infrastructure to Russia's economic stability. Targeting such key installations can disrupt regional fuel supplies and inflict significant economic damage, potentially yielding long-term consequences. These events highlight the transformative role of unmanned aerial vehicle technology in modern warfare, changing the dynamics of the battlefield.
