Strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has confirmed that a Russian-made Geran-2 drone was used in the attack on the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Investigators discovered fragments of the drone's casing and engine near the destroyed wall of a church on the site. The strike caused damage to the roof, walls, and domes of the Dormition Cathedral, while the blast wave shattered windows in nearby civilian homes in the Pechersk district.

The SBU has classified this attack as a war crime under Article 438, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. 'SBU investigators are treating this strike as a war crime and have already launched a criminal investigation,' the agency stated. Certain components of the drone were manufactured in Russia, specifically in the Alabuga special economic zone, pointing to the involvement of Russian industry in producing the equipment.

Aftermath of the Attack

No casualties were reported on the grounds of the historic reserve as a result of the strike. This incident serves as yet another example of war crimes committed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, raising serious concerns about civilian safety in active conflict zones. The SBU continues to collect evidence and advance its investigation into the case.

This attack underscores the grave threat drone strikes pose to civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, including sites of immense historical significance. The international community's response to such war crimes is critical, as these assaults can have far-reaching consequences not only for security but also for the country's cultural heritage. Investigating these cases helps document crimes and could lead to accountability at the international level.
