Operation 'Web'
According to UATV: On June 1, 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine launched a mission codenamed 'Web,' striking multiple Russian military airfields. The attacks targeted key strategic aviation assets of the Russian Federation. The airfields that came under assault included:
- Dyagilevo
- Olenya
- Ivanovo
- Bela
In total, 41 aircraft were hit, with up to 13 of them completely destroyed. The planes affected by the strikes comprised:
- A-50
- Tu-95
- Tu-22
- Tu-160
- An-12
- Il-78
Notably, a considerable portion of the destroyed planes will require restoration—a process that could take many years.
'The operation was unprecedented because, for the first time in history, strategic aviation aircraft were attacked on Russian soil.' - Oleksandr Musiyenko, military expert
This mission marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conflict, highlighting evolving tactics in countering Russian aggression. The destruction of these strategic bombers and support aircraft could limit Moscow's ability to conduct air operations against Ukraine.
Operation 'Web' is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the trajectory of the Ukraine-Russia war. Analysts and military experts will closely monitor Russia's response, which may shape future battlefield dynamics. The incident could also prompt the international community to reassess its support strategies, given the shifting realities on the ground.
