Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Key Russian Methanol Plant Deep Inside Russia.
Attack on the 'Metafrax Chemicals' Facility
According to UATV: In a long-range operation, drones from the Ukrainian Security Service's (SBU) 'Alpha' special operations center struck the 'Metafrax Chemicals' plant in Russia's Perm Krai on the night of February 17. This facility is one of Russia's and Europe's largest methanol producers. The attack demonstrates Ukraine's capability to target strategic military-industrial sites, despite the target being located over 1,600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
The 'Metafrax Chemicals' plant specializes in manufacturing:
- Methanol
- Urotropin
- Carbamide
- Pentaerythritol
This enterprise is a sanctioned component of Russia's military-industrial complex. During the assault, at least six explosions were recorded on the premises, with the primary strike hitting a methanol production unit. Methanol is a critical feedstock for various military applications, including explosives and rocket fuel.
Ukraine's Strategic Strikes on Russian Industry
This raid marks the second attack in the past month on a Russian energy target, following a strike on the 'Tamanneftegaz' oil terminal. An informed SBU source stated,
"The SBU continues its systematic work against enterprises that supply raw materials and components for weapons production to the Russian military-industrial complex."
These operations highlight Ukraine's growing capacity to conduct precision strikes against critical enemy infrastructure far behind the front lines.
This attack underscores the strategic focus of Ukrainian forces on degrading Russia's war-making capacity. By targeting facilities that provide raw materials for weaponry, Ukraine aims to weaken Russia's resource base and its ability to sustain combat operations. The significant distances involved in these strikes point to an evolution in Ukraine's technological capabilities and its approach to asymmetric warfare against a larger adversary.
