Senator Mark Kelly stated that Ukraine's decision to strike Russian territory in response to the Russian invasion could change the events in this conflict.

Participant of the CBS show "Face the Nation," Democrat from Arizona noted: "130,000 Russians were forced to leave their homes, and at this stage of the conflict, I think the Ukrainians did something unpredictable that could actually change the outcome of this confrontation".

The beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 created the threat that an expansion of the conflict into Russian territory by Ukraine and its allies could lead to a regional or global conflict. However, the war largely stayed in place until at least the moment when Ukrainian forces crossed the border of the Kursk region into Russian territory.

Host Margaret Brennan asked Kelly if he agrees with the use of American weapons on Russian territory at this Time.

"At this point, I agree," Kelly responded. "Ukraine has become the victim of an illegal attack by Vladimir Putin. ... He is deliberately killing women, children, elderly people. This was an illegal invasion. This advance, and I characterize it as such at this moment. I don't believe the Ukrainians are trying to hold Russian territory for a long time, but it has put Putin in a difficult situation".

Kelly added: "From the time of the invasion, already more than two years ago, we have periodically, as we should, assessed how we will act in providing the Ukrainians with our security assistance. And I believe it is important to continue examining their needs".

The Ukrainian invasion of Russian territory this month is widely seen as an attempt to reduce pressure on their own forces defending territory from the Russian aggressor and to put Ukraine in a better position for peace talks.

Kelly stated that the Ukrainian advance should teach Russians that Vladimir Putin is not the unmatched protector he tries to position himself as.

"He has always tried to claim that he will defend Russia," Kelly said. "I think his citizens see the results of what he has done in Ukraine, and now they are also somewhat under threat".
