Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Urges EU Council for Fresh Sanctions and €90 Billion Loan.
EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting
According to Novyny.live: On March 16, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council. During his speech, he called for continued backing of Ukraine and stressed the importance of reaching a peaceful resolution. Sybiha emphasized the urgent need to approve the EU’s 20th sanctions package, aimed at intensifying pressure on the aggressor, and to unlock a €90 billion loan that could significantly bolster Ukraine’s economic stability.
Territorial Gains and International Solidarity
At the meeting, the minister highlighted that in February, Ukrainian forces reclaimed more territory than the Russian army managed to seize—a clear sign of Ukraine’s active defensive efforts. Sybiha also noted that Kyiv has received security support requests from 11 countries, underscoring the broad international solidarity with Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
Sybiha specifically warned about threats emanating from Iran.
“For years, Iran has been supplying weapons to the Russian aggressor. Today, the Iranian regime poses a terrorist and nuclear threat,”he stated. In this context, the minister added:
“Any blackmail of Ukraine through the seizure of our people and state funds is absolutely unacceptable.”
These measures reflect Ukraine’s drive toward a peace process and its strategic goal of eventual EU membership. The security and stability challenges facing Ukraine remain urgent, requiring swift decisions and robust support from the international community. Active diplomatic engagement and cooperation with European allies could prove decisive in shaping Ukraine’s future and its role on the global stage.
