How long Ukrainians will be without light in winter: Politico forecast.
According to Politico, Ukraine may face power outages lasting up to 20 hours per day in case of a harsh winter and new Russian attacks on nuclear power plants.
In recent years, Russian aggression has led to significant damage to Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Just at the end of August, Russia carried out over 200 missile and drone attacks on energy facilities, resulting in a decrease in electricity production capacity by more than 9 GW. Eight power plants and over 800 heating supply facilities proved to be particularly vulnerable.
«The most realistic scenario the country will face this winter includes electricity supply restrictions for industry and households lasting 8-14 hours a day», - noted Gennadiy Ryabtsev, a scientist at the Institute for Strategic Studies of Ukraine.
Oleksandr Kharchenko, an advisor to the Ukrainian government on energy, warned that in case of severe cold and targeted Russian attacks on the nuclear supply system, Ukraine may face power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day.
This will negatively affect the population, leave critical factories without heating, and trigger a massive departure of Ukrainians abroad.
Victoria Hryb, a member of the Verkhovna Rada on energy security issues, stressed the criticality of the situation but expressed hope that Ukrainian partners will quickly provide assistance.
«We are expecting a very harsh winter. People will die in their homes because Russia is destroying the energy infrastructure», - added an American official.
The government, military administrations, and communities are actively cooperating in three main directions to ensure light and heat in all homes during the winter. This includes infrastructure preparation, resource reservation, and the creation of decentralized electricity production.
According to officials, there should be no energy supply issues by the end of October and in November. They also hope that this winter will pass with almost no outages, as was the case last year.
Currently, the maximum readiness level of Ukraine's energy system for the winter season is being recorded. Repair work on power stations was completed on Time.
Additionally, the European Commission is working on increasing electricity supply volumes to Ukraine. The G7 countries and other partners have already raised over $4 billion to restore the country's energy infrastructure.
