Deadly Collision on Chokolivsky Boulevard

According to Espreso.tv: A devastating crash involving a Mercedes-Benz on Chokolivsky Boulevard in Kyiv on June 5, 2026, claimed four lives, including two police officers. The driver responsible had accumulated 39 traffic violations and was linked to several prior non-fatal accidents. The Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an investigation under the article on traffic safety violations.

Those killed at the scene were:

  • Senior Lieutenant Dmytro Bondarchuk, 23;
  • Lieutenant Denys Budchenko, 21;
  • A 12-year-old boy.

The driver and a passenger of the Mercedes-Benz were hospitalized in serious condition. According to patrol police data, from January 1 to June 5, 2026, over 1,055,000 administrative violations were recorded, and patrol officers issued more than 1,730,000 citations for automatically detected offenses.

The Ongoing Issue of Traffic Rule Violations

Oleksiy Biloshytsky, first deputy head of the patrol police, voiced concerns about the inadequate deterrence for habitual offenders.

“A fine of 340 hryvnias has proven insufficient to deter a systematic violator,” he stated.
He added,
“If a person regularly disregards traffic rules, it should serve as a warning to the state and society about the potential danger to other road users.”

This tragedy highlights a persistent problem with traffic violations in Ukraine and underscores the urgent need for stricter accountability for drivers who repeatedly break the law. Given the high volume of administrative offenses, the situation demands immediate reforms in the penalty system to enhance road safety. It is crucial that state authorities take action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
