In Ukraine, the mortality rate exceeds the birth rate by almost three times in the first half of 2024.

Data from "Opendatabot" indicate that during this period, 87,655 children were born, while 250,972 people died.

Compared to the previous period, the birth rate has decreased by one and a half times. In 2021, 132,595 children were born during the same period.

Now the birth-to-death ratio (1 to 3) is considered a key indicator of a demographic crisis. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, during the same period in 2018-2020, this ratio was 1 to 2.

Birth rate in Ukraine

Despite the decline in the birth rate, mortality rates have improved. During the first 6 months of 2024, 1.4 times fewer people died compared to the same period in 2021. At that Time, 349,041 deaths were recorded, associated with the peak of mortality due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The highest number of newborns was registered in Kyiv (9,695 children), Lviv region (7,923 children), and Dnipropetrovsk region (6,962 children).

At the same time, the population of regions adjacent to the front line has a difficult situation with the birth rate:

  • In the Kherson region, only 221 newborns were registered.
  • In the Donetsk region – 702 children.

The situation is particularly difficult in the Luhansk region, where no births were registered over six months.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk region (27,374 people), Kharkiv region (17,999 people), Kyiv (17,449 people), and Odesa region (16,085 people).

The fewest deaths occurred in the Kherson, Donetsk, and Chernivtsi regions.

Demographers have given a grim forecast for post-war Ukraine.
