US Seeks to Revise Defense Pact with Denmark for Unilateral Military Access to Greenland.
US Aims to Overhaul Defense Agreement with Denmark
According to TSN.ua: The Trump administration has initiated a review of the 1951 defense agreement with Denmark, aiming to eliminate restrictions on US military deployments to Greenland. Washington is pushing for the authority to station its forces without first seeking approval from Copenhagen. This move is driven by heightened geopolitical competition, particularly from Russia and China, which has elevated Greenland's strategic importance for US national security. The island's location makes it a critical node for monitoring Arctic and North Atlantic activity.
Under the current pact, last amended in 2004, the US is required to inform both Denmark and Greenland of any changes to its military operations. Since the Cold War ended, the number of US military bases in Greenland has been drastically reduced from 17 to just one. Today, the only remaining US airbase on the island is Thule Air Base (Pituffik).
Greenland's Growing Strategic Value
President Donald Trump has emphasized Greenland's critical role for national security and for countering expansion by Russia or China. Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that her country is open to discussing the defense agreement, provided any revisions respect Danish sovereignty.
The potential revision of the treaty could encompass several key issues, including:
- the deployment of American missile defense systems;
- exclusive US rights to mineral extraction;
- an enhanced NATO presence in the Arctic, potentially in exchange for dropping tariffs against the EU.
These points are likely to be central in upcoming negotiations between the US and Denmark, given the new strategic challenges emerging in the region.
The push to revise the US-Denmark defense pact signals a shift in Washington's geopolitical priorities toward securing military flexibility in strategically vital areas. Greenland, with its vast natural resources and pivotal location between North America and Europe, is becoming a focal point of interest, especially amid growing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly reshape security and economic dynamics across the North Atlantic.
