The USA has extended the special status for refugees from Ukraine.
Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians in the USA Extended
The Biden administration has announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for refugees from Ukraine, Sudan, and Venezuela. Protection will now be in effect for another 18 months after the current term expires, allowing immigrants to remain in the USA with work authorization and protection from deportation. This is reported by The New York Times.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken supported the recommendation to extend the protection.
The previous U.S. president, Donald Trump, attempted to terminate the TPS program for certain countries, including Ukraine. However, his decision was overturned by the courts. Under the previous president, about 400,000 refugees from El Salvador and other countries lost their TPS status.
Ukrainians under temporary protection are mostly located in Germany. However, the number of such Ukrainians in Germany has decreased. Also, a significant number of Ukrainians with temporary protection are in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The Minister of National Unity, Oleksiy Chernyshov, announced Ukraine's readiness to provide jobs in defense enterprises with armor for Ukrainian citizens abroad as protection against possible mobilization.
