According to UATV: Following a brief but significant 35-minute meeting between Senator Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, anxiety has risen in both Ukraine and the United States regarding the trajectory of U.S.-Russia ties. The encounter prompted a notable shift in Washington’s stance: American officials now recognize that any attempt to negotiate with Moscow without fully accounting for Ukraine’s interests is bound to fail.

International relations expert Maksym Dzhigun pointed out that the Rubio-Lavrov talks marked the first time in a long while that the U.S. articulated a fresh position. Dzhigun emphasized that

“the American side has finally acknowledged that efforts to win over Putin through personal charm or Trump’s own affinity for him are futile”

Ukraine’s Surrender Ruled Out

The meeting also made it clear that forcing Ukraine into capitulation is not a viable option. Earlier U.S.-proposed peace initiatives were rejected by Russia, underscoring the complexity of the situation. Dzhigun noted that

“for some time, America tried to insist on the terms that the Russians proposed in Anchorage”
