The US has blocked dozens of websites linked to Russian intelligence.
Russian intelligence agents arrested for fraud in the US
The US Department of Justice announced the arrest of 41 internet domains used by Russian intelligence agents and their associates for fraud in the country, reports the US Department of Justice's press service.
The Russian government launched this scheme to steal confidential information from Americans, using legitimate email accounts to fraudulently force victims to reveal their credentials. Supported by our private sector partners, we will be relentless in exposing Russian actors and cybercriminals and depriving them of their criminal tools - said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.
According to revealed details, the seized domains belonged to hackers working for the Callisto Group - a division of the Center 18 of the Russian Federal Security Service.
The perpetrators used these domains to gain access to US government computers and mailboxes and other victims, as well as to steal valuable information.
Victims of Callisto Group hacker attacks included American companies, former employees of the US Intelligence Community, employees of the US Department of Defense and State Department, US military defense contractors, and employees of the US Department of Energy.
Additionally, Microsoft filed a civil lawsuit to seize 66 internet domains used by the hacker group Callisto Group, known as Star Blizzard.
Star Blizzard attacked more than 30 civil society organizations, including journalists, think tanks, and non-governmental organizations, to steal confidential information and interfere with their activities.
